Corn Harvest 2010

It’s an annual rite of spring. Pressure and temperature, acting over time, changes the form of snow crystals and the structural strength, permeability, thermal conductivity and density of the snow becomes a velvety, silken, slushy sprayfest.

The end result at Loveland is a shedding of clothes, a tapping of kegs and more tomfoolery than you could shake a lurk at. The skiing is always great, the company is always fun, and the cause is an eternally good one.

Plus everybody gets lei’d.

Come enjoy a selection of short and longer award-winning films featuring the best human-powered, deep-powder skiing on the planet. Proceeds to promote and preserve winter wildlands and a quality human-powered snowsports experience on public lands, and to preserve the legacy of human-powered winter recreation at Berthoud Pass.

CAIC Benefit Bash

Over the weekend we attended the Colorado Avalanche Information Center Benefit Bash at the Riverwalk Center in Breckenridge. It was great to see so many friendly faces and to be part of the biggest avalanche fundraiser we’re aware of. Friends of CAIC raised in the neighborhood of $30,000 $40,000 in one night and we were able to contribute over $500 to the effort. We’ll be making another substantial donation to CAIC before the season is through and we’re stoked for next year’s party.

2009 was another blowout year for the Powderwhore folks at the Oriental. Thanks to everyone who came out, we had a record-breaking year fund raising and everyone had a good time.

2009 – 2010 Dates Announced

Friends of Berthoud Pass is proud to continue our low cost, high quality avalanche awareness courses for the 2009-10 season.

Bob Tomsky, aka ‘Bobski’, the former Berthoud Pass Ski Patrol Avalanche Training Director, will provide backcountry travelers with a classroom overview of avalanche awareness, avoidance, rescue and forecasting methods and skills.

Topics such as route selection, hazard minimization, best practices, preparedness and terrain analysis will be covered in a 2 1/2 hour classroom presentation.

Full-day on-snow sessions at Berthoud Pass will be conducted in February 2010.

The course is open to the public with a $5 suggested donation.

The class runs from 7:00pm until approximately 9:30pm.
